Protecting architectural landmarks with reliable winter safety solutions.

As part of a major renovation project in Bonn, Germany, a distinctive glass pyramid roof required effective protection against snow and ice accumulation.

For the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection, ensuring safety, durability, and structural integrity during winter was a critical requirement.

The Challenge

Glass roof structures are particularly exposed to winter conditions. Snow and ice buildup can lead to safety risks, excessive loads, and potential structural damage. The challenge was to implement a solution that would prevent ice formation while integrating seamlessly into the renovated roof design.

The Solution

A DEVI snow and ice melting system was selected to provide reliable, automated protection. The installation was carried out by DEVI’s partner in Germany, Arenz Elektro-Anlagen GBR, ensuring professional execution and compliance with technical standards.

The system is based on DEVIsnow™ 20T heating cables (20 W/m, 400 V)—a twin-conductor cable with a 360° full-screen heating design and a UV-stable outer sheath, making it ideal for roof installations. The solution is designed for fast, safe, and efficient installation on roof surfaces, gutters, and downpipes.

System control is managed by a DEVIreg™ 850 controller with two roof sensors, enabling automatic activation based on real-time temperature and moisture conditions. A DV08 distribution unit ensures safe and reliable power distribution. The total connected load of the system is 24 kW.
