Located in Jiangsu Province, approximately 100 km from Shanghai, Suzhou is one of China's leading economic and residential development hubs. As modern apartment buildings continue to expand in densely populated urban areas, providing reliable domestic hot water across large residential complexes presents both comfort and hygiene challenges.
In a residential project comprising two apartment buildings and 600 apartments in Suzhou, China, a domestic hot water (DHW) temperature maintenance solution was implemented using electric pipe tracing technology. The objective was to maintain the required water temperature throughout the distribution network and support a consistent hot water supply at points of use across the buildings.
The challenge: Domestic Hot Water Temperature Maintenance in Large Residential Buildings
In multi-storey residential developments, hot water can lose temperature while travelling through extensive pipe networks. Maintaining the required water temperature throughout the system is important for occupant comfort and for supporting domestic hot water hygiene management strategies.
For the Suzhou project, the developer required a solution that would help maintain hot water temperature in approximately 600 apartments while supporting efficient operation of the building's hot water distribution system.
The solution: Self-Limiting Electric Heat Tracing for Domestic Hot Water Pipes
The domestic hot water installation incorporated pipe tracing with self-limiting heating cables on indoor branch pipework serving the apartments. Approximately 20 metres of heating cable were installed per apartment, resulting in a total installed cable length of around 10,000 metres.
The selected system utilised EChotwatt 55 self-limiting heating cables, designed for domestic hot water temperature maintenance applications. Self-limiting technology automatically adjusts heat output according to local pipe temperature conditions, helping maintain the desired temperature along the pipe network.
This electric heat tracing solution enabled continuous temperature maintenance across a complex residential hot water distribution system while supporting reliable hot water availability for residents.
